The tree made the openings

The Arenal Light began as one slab — a monolith with voids, cracks, and hollows the tree formed over decades. Nothing was carved. We squared the block, polished the faces to a satin furniture finish, and left every opening exactly where the tree put it.

By day it stands as sculpture; after dark, warm light rises from the base and escapes through the voids like embers inside the wood. There is exactly one, because exactly one slab grew this way.
